Around the world, women’s histories have been stifled or have remained hidden, and only in the recent decades are they being unearthed, commemorated and celebrated. But in Afghanistan today, a similar drive faces a triple burden – even as women battle tremendous day-to-day obstacles for equality, they must retrieve their own histories and also keep up with the large-scale destruction of heritage and memory. The country’s history has been continually ravaged and razed to the ground by a series of wars and occupations. In this context, the effort to document and portray women’s histories assumes an unprecedented urgency in Afghanistan. The Afghanistan Women’s History Museum project seeks to document, collect, preserve and exhibit women’s stories and artefacts down the ages – struggles and successes. It will first be a digital museum and then be followed by a physical one. The project will create a site for celebration and remembrance; and an energetic hub for women’s mandate. More importantly, the museum will potentially change not only the global perception of Afghan women but also act as a key enabler domestically.
