Empowerment For Her: Voices Behind the Veil

In a theatre in Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, a group of women step onto the stage wearing burqas. The audience falls silent. Voices Behind the Veil, a theatre production created through a collaboration between HAMRAH member, Empowerment for Her, together with Amnesty International Denmark, Kvinderådet (the Danish Women’s Society), brought the daily realities of Afghan women under Taliban rule into public view.

Presented around International Women’s Day and widely covered by Denmark’s media, the performance transformed the chadari (veiled hijab) from a symbol of oppression into a garment that carried the stories of brave Afghan women’s dignity, resistance, and voice.

Events such as this capture the essence of Empowerment for Her’s work. Throughout 2025, the organisation used art and culture as tools for advocacy, to highlight the plight of Afghan women and girls and maintain the pressure for international action. Beyond the stage, Empowerment for Her remained active in public mobilisation and international engagement. In March, its members joined more than 500 participants at a public demonstration organised by Danner and Kvinderådet, calling for the restoration of Afghan women’s rights. The organisation also brought its advocacy to New York, participating as part of the Danish government delegation to the 2025 UN Commission on the Status of Women, ensuring that Afghan women’s voices were present in global policy discussions.
